Before the interview

Interviews

Nobody likes having an interview, but it enables the employer to determine if an applicant's skills, experience and personality meet the job's requirements.

It also helps the employer assess whether an applicant would likely fit in with their culture.

This is why i've made a cheat sheet on how best to prepared for any situation...

STAR
Method

Situation

the questions asked would expect you to describe the situation and how it came about

Task

what the task was and your involvement in this

Action

the action that you took and how you approached this

Result

finally the result or outcome which could result in the tasks being fully completed or the learnings that came out of it.

This way of answering the questions will help you become organised in your thought processes.
Examples of the questions, broken down into competency groups, are as follows: –

Adaptability

Tell me about a time when you were asked to do something you had never done before. How did you react? What did you learn?
Tell me about the biggest change that you have had to deal with.  How did you adapt to that change?

Culture Fit

What is the most interesting thing about you that is not on your CV?
What is the biggest misconception that your fellow students have about you and why do they think that?

Collaboration

Give an example of when you had to work with someone who was difficult to get along with. How did you handle this?
Tell me about a time when collaborating with others has worked well for you.

Initiative and Taking Ownership

Tell me about a time when you were the first person to act on something.
Tell me about a time that you did not have time to deliver a project on time and the action that you took.

Handling Pressure
Describe a decision you made that was unpopular and how you handled implementing it.
Tell me about a time that you had to learn something you were not familiar with very quickly.

Now you are prepared, smash that interview!

The STAR method of interviewing is used in many instances by employers.

There are many variations regarding this, but they will all use the same methodology.
